The notebook computer business has gone from strength to strength in recent times. The battery shortage obstacle is not going to help the circumstances either. In fact if anything has held back demand or sales of laptops then its been shortages of parts. I think what makes it difficult is that the thing changes all the time.
With all the new insights in technology gaming laptops have benefitted a great extent in my opinion. The price points on new technology usually drops rapidly nowadays because everyone is always waiting for the new product to come out. For those who need portability, the performance laptops offer in terms of playing games shouldn’t be frowned upon much longer as power is better. Even more suprising these days In my opinion is how thin the designs are getting especially when you think about much speed is in them. Extreme gaming enthusiasts will always choose their desktop gaming rigs for performance and rightly so but it’s the versatility laptops provide that makes people compromise on frame rates. Gaming laptops are constantly testing the speed boundaries of notebooks so its always a good benchmark of how far the technology has come in that relation.
Even though the market share is ruled by companies selling via retail channels I feel the direct channel and custom built laptops will forever be about. On occasions, with larger companies the standard of the main parts is not upto scratch. The good aspect is that you don’t end up forking out for unneeded additions you don’t need. Pre-configured laptop computers are designed for people who have similar requirements and that is probably not you right? Custom made laptops serve everybody regardless of their particular requirements. Manufacturers who provide custom laptops usually offer a greater personalised and local service too. I really feel this is a main point that goes in favour for purchasing a notebook thats made to .
I am honestly awaiting to see what laptop computers come out next. Except from what has already been said Ultra mobile notebooks are another large thing witnessing expansion this year. This area is already facing tons of competition and is becoming overcrowded. Big screen and supremely light, that is what everybody should fancy. I guess forming an appealing price point is a giant barrier in all this. Surely the technology is available. I can expect its not too long before we begin seeing gaming laptops that weigh nothing. New laptops are seen every year of so and I’m sure the next few months already holds a lot of promise for us geeks.
I would recommend Rizeon if you are seeking the best laptops.

“Ouch- my back hurts,” you moan, reaching for your sore, pinched, or strained backside. This is an all-too common scenario for many of us. More than 65 million Americans suffer from back pain every year. It is the most frequent complaint from people seeking medical care.
Advances in medicine have created many treatment options for people seeking back pain relief. Alternative treatments have increased in number and availability as well. However, there is still no “miracle cure” able to rid the world of back pain once and for all. Since the intensity, causes and specific conditions vary with each patient, you need to discuss treatment options with a health care professional in order to tailor treatment to your specific condition.
Patients have an almost daunting number of choices of medications, some of which alleviate not only back pain but reduce inflammation, muscle tension, and spasms too. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) include aspirin, ibuprofen, and a host of prescription medicines. Taken regularly, these medications can significantly reduce inflammation and resulting back pain, and also provide back pain relief when taken during acute episodes. One common side effect of NSAIDs that should be taken into consideration is their propensity for causing gastrointestinal upset.
Acetaminophen comes in many over-the-counter medications. It acts as an analgesic, and is often used to treat acute pain. These medications can be taken alone or in conjunction with NSAIDs. Potential harmful side effects of acetaminophen include liver and kidney damage.
Doctors sometimes prescribe opioids or muscle relaxants for severe pain, but these medications can be habit-forming.
Acupuncture has been used in China for over 2,000 years and was first popularized in the United States in the 1970s. This ancient alternative to traditional ‘Western’ medicine has received validation by research studies which have documented acupuncture’s beneficial effects on patients, but many within the medical community are wary of relying too heavily on this form of treatment, as modern medicine has not been able to fully explain how acupuncture works.
Another alternative treatment, chiropractic, is based on the understanding that a properly functioning nervous system is essential for good health. The spinal column is quite literally the ‘backbone’ of the nervous system, because the spinal cord is encased inside it, as well as nerve roots that branch out into the entire body. Chiropractors adjust the spine of patients, aligning the vertebrae and correcting stress-inducing imbalances.
Your doctor may prescribe physical therapy, which helps patients build strength and increase flexibility. Physical therapy combines exercise with massage, heat/cold therapy, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation.
It is essential that you know what is causing your back pain so you can get the right treatment for you. Your doctor plays a crucial role in diagnosing and prescribing treatment for your condition, but in order to achieve the most effective treatment, you must take an active role in your healthcare also.

Information on ADHD Can Help You Diagnose Your Child
Although attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) are widely over diagnosed, there are many children and adults who suffer from this debilitating neurological disorder. By gathering as much information on ADHD as possible, you can learn the best methods for treatment and diagnosis of yourself or your child if you think either is stricken with this neurological disease.
The symptoms in the adult and the child version are both very different and certain traits that one might think of as normal behavior may actually be contributing to the ADHD problem. From information on ADHD, the most common symptom in both adults and children suffering with the disease is inattentiveness. Time and time again, people with ADHD are unable to focus their minds on the task at hand. This leads them to feel like they have inadequate time management and organizational skills if they are an adult or restlessness if they are a child.
Furthermore, a much more serious problem can arise from both adults and children with ADHD. Information on ADHD has told the neurological sciences that there is another type of ADHD present in both adults and children. This stems from a part of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which makes a person impulsive. Due to this impulsiveness, a person with ADHD is much more likely to rush into things and take more risks than a normal person. This will usually end up with the ADHD patient getting injured physically or mentally after an accident.
Since ADHD is such a broad illness, the information on ADHD does not really describe a set possible cause of the disorder. People have suggested that ADHD has its roots in the genes or could be caused by some sort of bacterial or viral infection. Some scientists have also cited possible nutritional deficiencies as culprits for the onset of ADHD. However, in light of much of the information on ADHD Nutrition, possible causes have wholly been constricted to either genetic inheritability, smoking during pregnancy or lack of nutrition.
As with most things in the human body, the genetic explanation seems to be the most valid. With information on ADHD stemming from a genetic explanation, the genes for ADHD Disorder are passed down to the children by the mother and father. This can be partially proven by the high rate of incidence between identical twins. If one twin has ADHD, there is a ninety two percent chance that the other will have it as well.
Another probable theory is that smoking during pregnancy can cause ADHD among children. Since nicotine is known to inhibit oxygen from reaching all of the necessary parts of the body, smoking can result in the baby not getting enough oxygen to stimulate full brain development. Alternatively, not all children who have ADHD have mothers that smoke, making the information on ADHD about smoking mothers scarce.
Finally, information on ADHD has shown that children and adults with the disorder lack the amounts of zinc found in a healthy individual. It turns out that some chemicals in their body actually break down zinc if they are exposed to certain elements found in food colorings.

Kids take their birthdays very seriously, and are extremely disappointed if their birthday parties are anything short of spectacular. Throwing an unforgettable kids birthday party can sometimes seem like a task better suited for a professional event planner. But with the proper party supplies, a little know how and a lot of imagination, you can throw a birthday party that the kids will be talking about all year.
Before you let your inner party planner take over, make sure that throughout the process you consult with the birthday boy or girl, unless of course the party is a surprise. Kids have their own ideas of what makes a party fun, and if the kids don’t have a good time the party is a bust. Discuss possible theme ideas, party games, food, and favors with them to ensure everything is kid friendly. If you are planning a surprise party you can ask siblings or friends for ideas and opinions.
Theme Party Ideas
A successful kids birthday party starts off with a great theme. There are many great party themes you can choose from, everything from your child’s favorite toy to their favorite movie genre. The possibilities are endless and a good theme can really help pull your entire party together.
Some possible themes include:
- Western (complete with cowboy hats)
- Princess (tiaras for all the girls)
- Cartoon characters
- Disney
- Carnival (clowns and plenty of games)
- Toys (Bratz, Barbie, Hot Wheels, etc)
Once you have your theme chosen, planning out a kids birthday party becomes much easier. Try and get everything from the decorations to the food to tie into the theme. For instance, if you are throwing a Western theme party get cowboy birthday banners and serve up barbequed burgers, chili, and hot dogs. As party favors you can give each little guests their own cowboy or cowgirl hat to wear. Make sure the birthday boy or girl’s hat is extra special.
Fun and Games
Games are an important part of any kids birthday party. Games should be fun and get everyone involved. Offering some small prizes to the winner of each game is also a great idea for the kids. Have a variety of games, some that require the kids to get active and some that requires them to use their heads. This will give everyone an opportunity to win a prize.
Some fun kid’s games include:
- Musical chairs
- Pin the tail on the donkey (this can be tied into your party theme, for example if your theme is Disney you could have pin the ears on the mouse)
- Relay races (you can get really creative with this one and get the kids to do everything from run a course with a balloon stuck between their legs to three legged races)
- Memory games (show the kids a selection of items and see who can remember the most once you have taken them away)
Favors are one of the highlights for children at a birthday party. They love getting little gifts of their own to take home with them. You don’t need to get too extravagant when it comes to party favors. Try and get some favors to go along with your theme. If you are having a princess theme give the girls tiaras as they arrive and a bag full of beauty items. Hairbrushes, hair clips, nail polish, and lip gloss are all fun and inexpensive ideas. More general favor ideas include pencil and eraser sets, notepads, and candies.
Food for Thought
Party food is a key component to any great birthday party. Depending on how long the party is, you’ll probably want to offer a lunch or dinner as well as snack and treats throughout the day. Most kids don’t have discriminating tastes so you don’t need to go overboard with a gourmet meal. Simple is usually better when it comes to kids.
Keep your snacks standard. Candy, chips, and pop will suffice, there is no need to add any fancy appetizers to the mix since they will probably get ignored. However, adding a veggie and fruit plate is a good idea since even kids can get sick of the sweet stuff. Be sure to have plenty of beverages on hand, and to save your sanity try and avoid caffeinated pops. Juice and water should be on hand as well. You can also make a fun colorful fruit punch for the kids to enjoy.
As for food, stick with simple dishes such as pizza, burgers, and hotdogs. These items are simple to prepare (or order) and will be a hit with the kids. Before planning your menu check to see if any of the children have food allergies or special dietary needs. Most parents whose kids have serious allergies such as peanuts will probably let you know as soon as the invitation is accepted. However, if you’ve got a little vegetarian in the group the last thing you want to do is serve them a hamburger or hotdog.
The birthday cake is the piece de resistance of the party. Everyone loves to see what type of delightful cake will be presented and how many candles the birthday boy or girl can blow out. If your baking skills consists of adding eggs and water to a package mix, fear not. While a package cake will still be a hit with the kids, there are plenty of cake shops and bakeries that can create any cake you desire. For instance, if you’re going with a baseball sports theme, you can get a delicious cake of any type shaped like a baseball. The kids will love it, and it saves you time and frustration as well. Make sure you know the birthday boy or girl’s favorite flavor before you order.
While planning a birthday party can be a difficult and time consuming task, all the work will be worth it when you see how much fun all the kids have. Birthday parties are monumental occasion for kids, and the more special you can make it the better.

As many of us well know, our expanding waistlines are at epidemic proportion in America. For those who are dubious, epidemic, according to Webster-Merriam online dictionary means, “affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community or region at the same time.”
When a person is twenty percent or more above their normal weight in terms of fat mass, then that particular person is considered obese. Morbid obesity is when a person is either fifty to a hundred percent over normal weight, more than one hundred pounds over normal weight, or so overweight that the extra baggage greatly interferes with the health of normal daily functions.
Many of us have been carrying around some extra baggage for so long and have become so desensitized to our slowly ascending dress sizes, and have become so used to referring to ourselves as “healthy” and “voluptuous” that we may not even realize there may be a body fat issue. The Body Mass Index, or BMI assessment can be helpful. This is used by health professionals to determine if a person is underweight, overweight or within a healthy weight range.
BMI does not distinguish the difference between the weight of fat and the weight of muscle, which is exponentially more. Because of this, it is not always accurate as far as the prediction of health concerns. For instance, a bodybuilder or someone with a lot of muscles may have a BMI that is numerically in the unhealthy range, even though they may be healthy as oxen.
BMI might also fall short of accurately reflecting body fat in people who are very short (under 5 feet) and in older people who tend to lose muscle mass as they age. It can also be inaccurate for some racial and ethnic groups like African-American and Latino American women, who tend to have different body types than Caucasian and Asian women, for example.
The location of fat on your body is important. Those who carry fat mainly around their waists may be more likely to develop health issues than those who carry their extra baggage in their hips and thighs. Even if your BMI falls within the normal range, this is true.
To measure your waist circumference, place a tape measure around your naked abdomen just above your hip bone. The tape should be snug, parallel to the floor and shouldn’t compress your skin. Relax and exhale as you measure your waist.
Women with a waist measurement of more than thirty five inches or men with a waist measurement of more than forty inches may have a higher risk than people with smaller waist measurements.
Age can also be a factor. As you get older, your body’s metabolism slows down and it doesn’t require as many calories to maintain its weight. So, this is why you may be forty years old with a similar lifestyle to when you were twenty but may notice a slight difference: at twenty you didn’t gain weight, but now at forty, you have gained weight. In addition, certain drugs, like steroids and some antidepressants, may cause excessive weight gain.
Females generally tend to experience unwanted weight gain more than men. Men burn more calories when they rest, so they require more calories to maintain their body weight. Also, when women enter the doors of menopause, their metabolic rate decreases significantly, which is partly why women gain so much weight after menopause. If you are moving to the Tucson, Arizona metropolitan area find a Tucson realtor to get advice on the best neighborhoods for your lifestyle and budget. Tucson is a growing yet comfortable city with a thriving business community, a top-notch university, a flourishing cultural center, and beautiful desert surroundings with nearby mountain hideaways. You will find outdoor sports and sporting events to suit every taste. Whether you are a young family looking for a place to put down roots or a couple ready to retire and enjoy life, a good Tucson realtor can help you to find the perfect home to live out your dreams.
Tucson is one of the larger metro areas in the United States with a population that will likely top 1 million in the next few years. The city of Tucson itself is almost 600,000. But, even with a growing population, you can still find that “small town” or suburban feel. A good Tucson realtor can find you the perfect neighborhood for you, whether you want an exciting night life, great schools, or a golf course nearby.
The influence from south of the border has given the area a decidedly Hispanic and Latino flair-which you may notice when you are taking a tour around the city with a Tucson realtor-from the entertainment, to the food and the buildings. However, other cultures are represented as well. Have your Tucson realtor show you some of the historic neighborhoods and the newer developments as well.
Tucson has several art and history museums and also the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, which is recognized as one of the best zoos in the country with its selection of hundreds of desert animals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish, and also a beautiful desert botanical garden. Your Tucson realtor can also tell you about the Arizona Opera Company based in Tucson.
For the sports fan, there are many options in Tucson as well. It is the spring training home for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Chicago White Sox, and the Colorado Rockies, and home to a local minor league team called the Tucson Sidewinders. Have your Tucson realtor drive by the park. If you’re a NASCAR fan, you will find exciting races at Tucson Raceway park. The University of Arizona has one of the top athletic departments in the nation.
The University of Arizona, is the leading employer in the city, and then Davis-Monthan Air force base. If you are already working with a Tucson realtor, you may already have a job lined up, but if you are looking for a new job, there are some areas that you should consider. Technology is a big part of the economy in Tucson. Your Tucson realtor can suggest some good ideas of where you should look. Consider Raytheon Missile Systems, Texas Instruments, and others which play significant role in the economic future of the area.
Tucson is a terrific area with endless opportunities for those who are looking to move there. It is a community with a unique flavor, where you can find everything from recreation, to retirement living, to family neighborhoods. It is also a college town and a cultural enclave. Talk to a realtor for the move of a lifetime.

The phrase, “money can’t buy happiness,” used to merely be accepted as an old
adage or proverb. However, substantial research has now been done over the years
to shed a little more light on this long standing saying.
Studies now clearly show that there is little difference between the level of perceived
happiness between richer and poorer groups of people. In fact, around the World,
poorer people in poorer countries often have seem to have the edge in reporting a
greater sense of happiness. Naturally I’m not referring here to people who are in a
state of starvation or other dire circumstances, but rather people who simply live a
less hectic and materialistic lifestyle than most of us in more industrialized settings.
Numerous theories abound, but generally it’s thought that poorer people report
greater happiness because they have less to worry about and so it takes less to
make them happy. With fewer possessions and fewer options for entertainment
family activities and other relationships occupy a greater percentage of time than
might typically be observed among people who are better off. Some studies surmise
that because marriage and family relationships bring some of the greatest feelings
of happiness that poorer people are happier because they spend more time engaged
in family activities and build stronger family bonds. Of course, people don’t have to
live in a poor country. The same findings have been reported among poorer people
in industrialized countries like the United States.
I won’t cite actual references and statistics because the studies are so numerous
that you can easily find all of the studies you want simply by entering the phrase,
“money can’t buy happiness,” into your favorite search engine.
That’s not to say, though, that if you want to be happy you should try to remain
poor, or seek to be poor if you don’t happen to be. Speaking of which, while most of
us have a concept of what poor is, have you ever stopped to think that most people
don’t really know what a true definition of, “rich,” is?
Some people erroneously conclude that people with big homes and nice cars are,
“rich,” though, in most cases, such items are more likely to be greater indicators of
debt than wealth. A big home with a big mortgage or a nice car with large monthly
payments represents debt, not wealth.
Likewise, many people feel that anyone who makes a certain amount of money is,
“rich,” especially if they happen to make more than the “magic” threshold amount of
$100,000 a year. Wrong! Just ask anyone who makes $100,000 a year and they will
quickly confirm that most people who earn that much are not rich.
In fact, because most people who earn more tend to spend more, yearly earnings
amounts can range quite high without a person being truly, “rich.”
So, what’s a good definition of what it means to be rich? My personal favorite is the
one that Bill Cosby gave when asked by his children on his popular TV show, “The
Cosby Show,” which aired from 1984 to 1992. While discussing with them the topic
of what it means to be rich he said the difference is that, “people who are not rich
work for their money, whereas rich people’s money works for them.” Not only is that
about as good a definition as you’ll find, but it happens to be one that’s universally
accepted as true.
Another well accepted definition of what it means to be rich is that rich people work
because they want to and not because they have to, whereas people who are not
rich work because they have to.
Still think that money can’t buy happiness? If it’s true that the happiest people of all
have been found to be those who spend the most time with their family, then is it
possible that if you are in the financial position to be able to work less that you
could spend more time with your family, thus making you, and your family, happier?
Here is something else to think about: Did you know that the majority of wealthy
people are business owners? Over 70 percent of all millionaires own their own
business.
What’s more, are you aware that even if you aren’t rich you can enjoy many of the
same benefits simply by owning a successful home based business?
It’s already been established that spending time with our spouse or family is what
makes most people happiest. So, if your current job or occupation is preventing you
from spending time with your family, or doing the other things in life that you
enjoy, due to mandatory long hours at work, mandatory travel, etc., owning a home
business can provide you with extra income, which can in turn reduce the need for
you to work as many hours away from home (or, again, whatever in life it is that you
enjoy).
Also near the top of the list of things that equate to personal happiness is good
health. In fact, when people are asked if they would rather have money or good
health, most people answer that they would rather have good health. After all, what
good is money if you don’t have the good health to enjoy it?
Did you know that, for most people, income and money equate directly to good
health? Poor people, for instance, typically cannot afford to feed their families
properly to maintain optimal natural health, or afford quality medical insurance to
maintain optimal medical health — whether preventative care such as routine
checkups and dental visits, or care when something goes wrong or treatment is
needed.
Just one of the things that money buys is choice. People without money are forced
to buy what they can afford, whereas people with money have the luxury and
advantage of choice. People with money can not only afford to buy the best medical
insurance, but they typically have more options and more choice when it comes to
medical care. People without money may have very restrictive health care options, or
may not even have insurance at all.
And, of course, good health also starts with what we eat. Have you ever stopped to
realize that junk food is by far cheaper and more affordable than the quality food
items that have been proven to be best for our health?
Fresh fruits and vegetables, for instance, are far more expensive than things like
potato chips, snack foods, junk food, and less healthy food items. Quality meats
(with less fat) are more expensive than cheaper cuts of meat. Organically grown
produce is more expensive than regular produce. and It’s been well proven that,
typically, the higher the education and income level that people have, the healthier
they eat, the better insurance they have, and the healthier they actually are. And,
healthier people are happier people. Still think that money can’t buy happiness?
Yet another item that ranks high on the list of what people equate to happiness is
safety. The opposite of safety is fear, and fear is closely related to stress, which
we’ll talk about in a minute. Are you driving a lesser car than you would like to that
doesn’t make you feel quite as safe as you would like to feel? Better built and
maintained homes can be safer and more comfortable than homes that are less so.
If someone can’t afford to be in the kind of home and neighborhood they would like
to be in, they are likely to be less happy than if they were.
We’ve talked about some of the things that researchers have universally found to be
responsible for greater happiness, but how about one of the greatest causes of
unhappiness: stress?
Not only does stress make people unhappy, but it’s also been determined to be
unhealthy. Stress can lead to health problems.
On the one hand the more money people have the more they have to worry about.
And, of course, some people are never satisfied. The more money they make, the
more things they have to buy, and the more responsibilities and headaches they
seemingly create for themselves. But that certainly doesn’t describe what everyone
does with money.
Not including people who are never satisfied and can never have enough, more
money can equate directly to less financial stress. Less stress equates to a happier
person.
Someone who doesn’t have enough money to pay his or her bills, or who is
constantly living paycheck to paycheck is likely to be more stressed than someone
who has extra money in the bank.
And, of course, money can buy luxury, relaxation, and pampering, all of which
equate to less stress (more happiness), and even better physical well being.
Celebrities and the well to do are often admired for looking good for their age,
younger than their age, etc. Plastic surgery not withstanding, it’s largely due to all
of the perks mentioned above. Celebrities typically lead pampered lives and often
have the best of everything. Better food, less stress, more relaxation and
pampering, fewer wrinkles
More often the people likely to be found saying that, “money can’t buy happiness,”
the most are people who either don’t have it, or never have. After all, how would
they know? Wealthy people also sometimes say that, “money can’t buy happiness,”
but they are also just as likely to follow that statement by telling you that they
would also, “rather be with it than without it.”
How about you, do you still think that money can’t buy happiness? If so, maybe you
better think again…

Electronic Medical Record
The electronic medical record, or EMR, has been redesigned by technology to suite the 21st century medical practice. The entire process has been wrapped around your finger. In other words, information, records, superbill, transcription, soap notes, and medical procedure codes are all at your finger tips.
All electronic medical records have been organized and stored in a variety of ways, usually depending on the needs and budget of the practice. Often, multiple databases store patient information, medical collection, medical transcription, and other information vital to effective medical practice management.
Technology has simplified electronic medical records every step of the way by streamlining the databases, even for multiple offices of the same practice, in a secure online data environment. Another reason why technology has made electronic medical record so user friendly, is that it now saves practices money, through simple installation and management.
A Tour of the Medical Process
Technology can be a scary thing sometimes, so it is important to research the positives and negatives of adopting new technologies, especially in the medical profession. Accurate and complete information in an EMR system are a type of “preventative medicine,” which not only protects the patient but also the medical practice.
“Keep to the code” is not only a good line for a blockbuster pirate movie but also for medical practices. There are many codes to keep track of, and they are all necessary to keep around and refer to you. New medical office software includes easy access to icd9 codes, 2004 CPT codes, diagnosis code, and HCFA 1500 forms.
Medical office software also must be managed by a qualified medical billing specialist with a qualified HIPPA consultant available to assist in the processing of the electronic medical record. Medical office software puts practices in touch with qualified individuals to help process the electronic medical record.
In addition to working with codes and qualified consultants, medical billing software, medical claim software, and electronic claim processing combine their technology in order to manage all claims and billing, including Medicare billing. But, medical office software packages also remember to include access and management of every medical transcription job created on a transcription machine.
Electronic Medical Record Accessibility
In short, those who are not authorized have no access and those who are authorized have very simple and convenient access. Electronic medical records are secured and even backed up, allowing access codes and login information only to those who are authorized.
Those who are authorized not only have access at their office but also by medical billing PDA, which allows records and appointments to be managed on a PDA. Download medical palm is a convenient way to work with real-time information and to manage a medical practice, even when away from the office.
Technological Catch-22
The catch with technology will always be “fear not” on one hand, and “be careful” on the other. It is no different with new medical technology for medical practices. This article has provided terms and links to assist medical practices in getting started on learning new technology and making educated decisions on effective and affordable technology to adopt.

“Let’s go to Disney World!” is the cry heard by millions of parents each year. “But how we get there?” parents often cry a few weeks before the trip.
Planning for the long-range success of your business can be boiled down to the same three step exercise you use to map out your trip to see Mickey.
First, (and of greatest importance) you have to get a handle on where you are right now, as a business and as a family.
Second, you need to determine where you want to be. As Will Rogers said, “It really doesn’t matter that you are making great time if you’re heading in the wrong direction.”
Finally, you need to sort out the available alternatives will allow you to move smoothly from where you all are to where you want to.
Repair for most of us, a great place to start is with a meeting where we can begin the process. In a family owned business, family members from different generations may have opposing ideas, and these need to be considered as you plan for the future. Even if all members are in general agreement, no one may know how to discuss his or her point of view.
Frequently this lack of honest, unemotional communication is complicated by a lack of understanding of the techniques available. While planning for the future of the business and the family, these emotional issues are often overlooked or ignored in favor of “tax savings” for example, to everyone’s sorrow later on.
The Family Conference: A Productive Planning Strategy
An excellent beginning is to hold a family conference. The family conference as a positive step toward assuring the future for everyone. The idea that “someday this will all work out” is a pipe dream. Nothing good happens by accident, without planning. The family conference helps you understand that your goals do not have the conflict with the goals of your father, mother, brother, sister, son, or daughter.
The objective of the family conference is to develop a set of suggested activities and planning ideas that you and your advisers can use to achieve your goals. Our quarter-century of experience has shown that the family/owners already have 90% of the information necessary to creatively plan for the future of their organization.
We believe that success comes only when the focus is on the needs and feelings of everyone involved.
What’s needed is a framework for discussion, a process that allows them to construct effective dialogue to remove past slights, align expectations and create shared goals for the future. The results will provide their advisors a blueprint for creating the results the family seeks.
The Strategic Conversations Process: Before, During, and After the Family Conference
The 5 Key Principles of Strategic Conversations are:
1. Set the context for the interaction:
In order for a conversation to be “strategic,” the stage must to be set with certain understanding and agreement. This process is a critical first step for it clarifies the objective and creates an atmosphere where trust can be built. You can see how important this is when the individuals involved have long histories with each other.
2. Initiate the dialogue:
Both an action step and a mind-set. As you communicate, your mind will be oriented so that you will receive and process input and respond to it in a focused and strategic manner. It is not necessary for each person involved to understand the principles, as long as you do. Having a “conversations on purpose” not the usual chit chat. The process identifies the subject as important.
3. Feedback for clarification:
“I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.” Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland. In its normal state, interpersonal communication is actually more often misinterpretation. All parties to the conversation believe they are being clear in what they are conveying, and the receivers think they are getting the message.
The truth is, most of the time the message being received is only partially correct. In order to have a strategic conversation, all parties to the conversation must be clear. The Strategic Conversations report provides examples of clarification strategies.
4. Show Appreciation:
The ending of a conversation is an important event in and of itself. All too often, a conversation ends too abruptly leaving one or more of the participants feeling awkward or uncomfortable. Then, the uncomfortable feeling is the last memory with which the participant is left. The act of showing appreciation is an effective gateway to transitioning to the close of a conversation and summing up the value of the interaction. There are examples of the power and art of showing appreciation in the 5 Keys To Strategic Conversations report.
5. Extend yourself:
This element opens the door for a future interaction of this type of communication. It can invite a closer relationship, if desired, or simply establish a connection. Modeling this type of behavior will encourage others to behave in a similar manner, leading to clearer, more accurate strategic conversations. Paying forward is an effective way to insure productive future conversations. The report contains tips on how to extend yourself in ways that will positively impact your communications.
Imagine, personal and business relationships without conflict. Decision made in a cooperative environment with “everybody rowing in the same direction” all the time.
Is it possible? It is when you have internalized the principles of “Strategic Conversations” and integrated them into your very being.
Is it easy? No, nothing worthwhile ever is. But since you have used, to a greater or lesser degree, each of the principles over time – you will be able to do this, given the commitment.

Asphalt and concrete are the most popular types of material for paving driveways. Asphalt driveways and concrete driveways both have their unique advantages. If you live in a cold climate and are considering a concrete driveway you need to make sure the base for the driveway is heavily laid with gravel and it is compacted first. Otherwise the driveway will run the risk of cracking due to frost heaves. In addition, concrete is susceptible to salt damage, a material frequently used on roads in cold weather parts of the country. On the other hand, if you live in a warm or hot climate and are considering asphalt paving, then you need to consider the fact that asphalt can become soft in the hot sun and is therefore susceptible to ruts.
Asphalt paved driveways are typically cheaper to install than concrete paved driveways. However, asphalt paved driveways need significant more care over time to protect them. Asphalt paved driveways need to be sealed at least once every 3-5 years. Each sealing, though easily completed by a do it yourself homeowner, costs money and time. In addition, the sealer needs typically 2-3 days to dry before you can park a vehicle on it. Also, a newly asphalt paved driveway should not be sealed for at least 6-9 months, as the light oils associated with the asphalt need to evaporate first. If an asphalt driveway is sealed too soon it will remain soft forever.
Asphalt driveways do not need to be always black and concrete driveways do not always need to be off-white. Both asphalt and concrete driveways can be tinted to various colors. Check with your prospective paving contractors first to see what color options there are for your driveway project.
Asphalt driveways, if maintained can typically last 25-30 years. Concrete driveways can last even longer. However, both require a solid foundation to be laid on. If not laid on a solid foundation both will crack over time, especially in colder weather climates. Asphalt cracks are easier to repair than concrete driveway cracks.
Consideration for the slope of the driveway should also be considered when contemplating concrete driveways. Over time, concrete driveways can shear off of the foundation they are poured on which can lead to unwanted cracks.
