Writing articles for magazines, the Internet or the local community paper needn’t be a headache. Providing they are informative, reasonably short and to the point, readers and publishers will welcome your articles.
But, if the secret to writing neat, sweet articles is to keep them succinct, how do you maintain your focus and avoid the pitfalls of waffle?
Try the 3 by 3 Plan!
Taking a really simple example, suppose you want to write about kites. The first stage is to brainstorm all the possible topics under the heading of ‘Kites’. You may come up with several ideas here: for example, kite history, kite safety or making a kite. Any of these subjects could form the basis of a good article.
Select just one of these ideas (let’s choose ‘kite-making’) and then you can start to put the ‘3 by 3 Plan’ into action.
Brainstorm again to extract just three topics related to kite-making. Remember, you want to stay focused in your article, so three is a good number to begin with! The topics you find could be:
1. Types of kite
2. Parts of a kite
3. Decorating a kite
Now, for each of your three main topics, select three linked sub-topics that will relate to your audience. Children (or parents, for that matter!) might want to know the basic information about:
1. Types of kite – (a) Classic diamond (b) Hexagon (c) Star
2. Parts of a kite – (a) Sails (b) Spars (c) Flying lines
3. Decorating a kite – (a) Painting (b) T-shirt transfer paper (c) Applique
Once your plan is in place, write three sentences about each of your (a), (b) and (c) sub-topics. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your article will grow and how sharp and to-the-point your finished writing will be.
And finally, staying with the idea of three as your ‘magic’ number, here are three more tips:
1. Make sure you have a connecting or transition sentence between each main topic. A good linking phrase will entice your reader to keep on reading!
2. Write your introduction after you’ve written the main body of the article. Keep it interesting but limit it to 3 sentences!
3. If you want to write a longer article, use 5 or 7 as your ‘magic’ number …

Shortly before I discovered the wonders of marketing online with well-written articles, I read a book written by well-known branding expert Al Ries and his daughter Laura Ries, titled 11 Immutable Laws of Internet Branding. Immutable law number 6 was The law of Advertising. It dealt at length with why conventional advertising does not quite work online and why we should expect to see a revolution with this revolutionary new medium and not just a replay of the past.
That book helped me a great deal to become immune to the massive quantity of very convincing hype selling banner ads online. It also helped me understand early on why traditional advertising was not working on the net (it has a lot to do with the World Wide Web being interactive.) Most of all it prepared me to quickly grasp the potential of articles as an online marketing tool.
Still when I wrote my first promotional article and posted it to only one high-traffic articles directory that had been highly recommended, it had some very important key online marketing elements missing.
Firstly it was not a keyword-rich article and secondly it did not direct traffic to any site. The resource box simply talked about my online business and the service I was offering and mentioned an email address where I could be reached. Later I had the good sense to introduce an email course on article marketing designed to trap email addresses. But that was later and another story for another day.
Until then I had found it very difficult to attract any traffic to any of the websites I owned. Basically folks needed to spend a small fortune on some advertising to attract a handful of not exactly-targeted-but-mostly-curious-traffic to their sites. So you can imagine the excitement I felt when I checked on the site a few days later and noted that the article had already received a double-digit number in terms of hits. And I knew that this was very highly-targeted traffic.
A few weeks later, the results started trickling in.
Admittedly I had still not made my first sale, but I was still receiving the odd inquiry or two. However a couple more weeks down the road, I had signed on my first regular client and a couple of other one-off jobs. Total revenue from that single article to date is about $10,000 and still counting.
This, to me, is pure magic and illustrates the power of article marketing rather effectively. Remember that it all started happening with one article. It means that if one were to just get a handful of articles written, use the right keywords, powerful headlines and aggressively use all your articles for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) of your site or sites, there is no limit to what you can achieve.
And one does not even need to be a writer to make use of what is bound to end up being the most powerful marketing tool ever used by man. Anybody can simply hire an online writer either directly or through some increasingly innovative sites where quality writers can bid for your writing work. And the rates are really dirt-cheap, especially when you consider the fact that your promotional article will last forever, working very hard to drive massive traffic in the direction of your website.

Global warming and the financial crisis, these double perils have let off the S. Alps, at least for now. However it could have been so altogether different. Before Xmas towns in the Les Houches region were cut off when snow hammered down. Dual carriage way passes such as the busy Col du La Rosiere were shut. In that location there was no mains or telephones, home owners had to be moved out to temporary dwellings, it appeared as if it were the repeat of 1997.
It appears that all promotion is good promotion. Araches-la-Frasse appeared every night on the French news. As soon as mains was reconnected bookings started to arrive, attracted by the excellent conditions.
Bessans and nearby Luz Ardiden claim just about 5.5 meters snow on the upper areas at 2300 meters elevation and 2.3 m at the end of the pistes. At the moment the best in the Alps. Alpe d Huez alleges there is 3 m at the the highest point of the resort. Unfortunately a snow drift has damaged a support of the drag lift that serves the area. They will be out of commission till mid February.
In other resorts in the S. Alps ski breaks reservations have increased 20% in Meribel, Le Grand-Bornand and Isola 2000. Les Menuires has 99.4% occupancy and sold a record breaking number of ski passes on Saturday. This is good for big ski firms.

Timing in public speaking is one of the most important aspects of humor and NO ZZZZZs speaking. Not only is timing involved in an individual piece of humor, it is also involved in the placement of that piece of humor in the overall presentation. Timing is also involved in spontaneous reactions to ‘expected’ unexpected developments during the presentation.
Jack Benny said, ‘When you are speaking, timing is not so much knowing when to speak, but knowing when to pause.’ He should know, because he delivered one of the funniest and most famous lines in the history of comedy after an extremely long pause. He was being held up by a robber at gunpoint. The robber said, ‘Your money or your life!’ Jack didn’t speak a word for an extended period of time. The robber became impatient and said, ‘YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE!!’ Jack finally replied, ‘I’m thinking.’ His persona as a cheapskate, coupled with a long pause indicating he was having trouble deciding whether to give up his money, or die was hilarious. A pause lets the audience catch up and draw pictures in their mind. It is the audience’s signal to imagine.
In public joke telling, a pause just before and just after your punch line gives the audience a chance to laugh. Absolutely do not continue speaking when laughter is expected. Laughter is hard to get and easy to discourage. Hold eye contact a little bit longer than you think you should when delivering punch lines because time is hard to judge when you are pumped-up for a speaking engagement.
The size of your audience will affect your timing. Your presentation will take less time to deliver to smaller audiences. Smaller audiences should mean quicker laughter. Conversely, presentations will take longer for big crowds in large public arenas. Your pauses will be longer to compensate for the wave effect created because of the physical distance between you and the back row of the audience.

About RFID Radio frequency identification or RFID, is a generic term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify
people or objects. There are several methods of identification, but the most common is to store a serial number that
identifies a person or object, and perhaps other information, on a microchip that is attached to an antenna (the chip and the
antenna together are called an RFID transponder or an RFID tag. Visit http://www.bigsquid.org for more information on this).
The antenna enables the chip to transmit the identification information to a reader. The reader converts the radio waves
reflected back from the RFID tag into digital information that can then be passed on to the computers that can make use of
it.
Objective The objective of any RFID system is to carry data in suitable transponders, generally known as tags, and to retrieve data, by
machine-readable means, at a suitable time and place to satisfy particular application needs. Data within a tag may provide
identification for an item in manufacture, goods in transit, a location, and identity of a vehicle, an animal or individual.
By including additional data the prospect is provided for supporting applications through item specific information or
instructions immediately available on reading the tag.
The system requires, in addition to tags, a means of reading or interrogating the tags and some means of communicating the
data to a host computer or information management system. A system will also include a facility for entering or programming
data into the tags. Quite often an antenna is distinguished as if it were a separate part of an RFID system. While its
importance justifies the attention it must be seen as a feature that is present in both readers and tags, essential for the
communication between the two. To understand and appreciate the capabilities of RFID systems it is necessary to consider
their constituent parts. It is also necessary to consider the data flow requirements that influence the choice of systems and
the practicalities of communicating across the air interface. By considering the system components and their function within
the data flow chain it is possible to grasp most of the important issues that influence the effective application of RFID.
However, it is useful to begin by briefly considering the manner in which wireless communication is achieved, as the
techniques involved have an important bearing upon the design of the system components.
Components of RFID
RFID Reader : The Reader is a radio frequency device used to read data from the microchip contained in the RFID tag. RFID readers use a
variety of methods to communicate with tags. The most common method for reading passive tags at close range is called
inductive coupling. Simply put, the coiled antenna of the reader creates a magnetic field with the coiled antenna of the tag.
The tag draws energy from this field and uses it to send back waves to the reader, which is turned into digital information -
the tag’s electronic product code. A Reader comprises of a transmitter, receiver, control module and communication functions, sometimes called a transceiver in
radio terms for it to link to a controlling PC. Readers should have an attached antenna, which is used to transmit and
receive the radio frequency signal. Each reader is accompanied with PC compatible software that allows the user to read and
program tags. Win 2K, XP, ME are some of the operating systems compatible with our Readers.
RFID Tag : An RFID tag or transponder is a wireless system composed of an electronic chip (semi-conductor device) with a memory where
data can be stored. The memory can be permanent or volatile. They are classified within two frequency ranges, namely 125 KHz
(low frequency) and 13.56 MHz (high frequency).
The RFID Business Case: RFID in the Receiving Business Process: RFID readers are placed in the receiving area to monitor pallet and case RFID tags.
The RFID readers verify the pallet license plate, count the units on the pallet, identify the vendor, and confirm the
purchase order receipt without human intervention in the business transaction. RFID in the Conversion Business Process: RFID readers can be placed along the flow path of a manufacturing process.
Work-in-process, or WIP, can be enabled by RFID tags for tracking and monitoring the conversion of raw materials and
intermediates into finished goods and stock-keeping units. This material information is integrated with the ERP production
order transaction process to track manufacturing steps and issue production transactions. RFID in the Customer Order Picking Business Process: Forklift drivers will use RFID readers to select case and pallet
materials to pick order and assemble the shipment. Elimination of staging and verification processes can yield savings.
This material information is integrated with the ERP warehouse and order management process to update the customer order pick
list.
RFID in the Shipping Business Process: Forklift drivers and warehouse bays will use RFID readers to track case and pallet
materials onto trucks. This material information is integrated with the ERP warehouse and order management process to update
the customer order shipment. The RFID value proposition propagates if the RFID infrastructure is leveraged by other enterprises in the downstream value
chain.

Sometimes your PC will start acting strange for no apparent reason or a program which you use regularly will all of a sudden stop working as it should. This can be a frustrating experience especially if you have no idea where to go for help. If this happens to you, don’t panic! Here are some simple tips which may turn your frown upside down.
1. Don’t assume that your problem is unique. The chances are that someone else has had that problem and it has already been solved. Google is a great place for getting technical support help believe it or not. You may have to experiment with wording your problem and refining your search, but it’s worth a try. For example my Outlook email client stopped showing me the ‘Subject’ field when I was composing new email. As a result all of my email was going out without a subject. After a bit of experimenting with wording the problem I found the answer by searching on the phrase “Outlook subject field missing”. Someone in an online discussion group had the same problem and the answer was provided. When you find good discussions groups bookmark them for future use. I have a bookmark I call Technical Support Help and it’s full of great web sites.
2. The Google trick is good for lots of software but you should always try the web site of the program’s manufacturer as well. Sometimes your problem is really a bug and there may be a new release or work around available. Many software web sites have FAQs, discussion lists, and help desks available that provide free support. Sometimes there is a telephone number that you can call but you may have to pay for live help.
3. There are companies that offer free general help for simple questions and then charge a sliding scale for more complicated ones. Support Freaks (www.supportfreaks.com) is a good one to try. Even if you have to pay, the rates are reasonable. Click on the “Freebies” link, under the “Quick Links” menu to see if your question is eligible for free help.
4. There are probably any number of local PC support groups that meet in libraries and other locations near your home. Some of these groups are very specific in nature and some are general. Try searching Google for “PC Support Group” or “PC User group” and the name of your town. Also check with your local librarian and computer stores. They often know of these groups.
5. Speaking of computer stores, you can often pick the brains of the more knowledgeable salespeople if you are lucky enough to find any. Many times these employees love computers so much that they will act as your big brother or sister if you need some quick help. Sometimes they moonlight as consultants at a good rate.
This ought to be enough information to get you started on the road to solving your next PC or software problem. If you are having Internet connectivity problems then your ISP is the first place to start. If you can’t get online at all, and you don’t think you know their phone number, think again. I’ll bet that it’s printed on every bill that they send you. You’ll also need your account number and you can bet that it’s printed on the bill as well.
Remember — When it comes to getting technical support help, the first rule is: Don’t Panic!

General Omar N. Bradley, who played a major role in World War II, once observed that “[i]f we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner” (Quoteworld.org). This ominous prediction, however doomsday it may sound, is well on its way to becoming truth. Americans as a whole are too dependent on technology and such dependence is dangerous.
Perhaps the most recent indication that Americans are asking too much from technology is the Blackout of 2003, so designated by our country’s news anchors. On Thursday, August 14, some 50 million citizens were left literally “in the dark” from Detroit to New York City in biggest and longest blackout in American history. Remarkably, mass panic and rioting did not occur even in New York. Officials actually remarked that the arrest rate was lower that night than average (Adler). What did happen more than usual were calls to the fire department to put out fires; “a number of which were caused by New Yorkers’ unfamiliarity with the technology of candles” (Adler). As humorous as it is, it also shows the serious consequence of over familiarity with too much technology. Have we “progressed” so far that lighting a match becomes as wondrous as it might have been to ancient people who accidentally caused a spark to set wood on fire? Fires were not the only trouble that night; hundreds of people were locked out of hotels for over a day because the doors’ dependence on electric keys; many people could not buy basic necessities because they usually used credit cards which no longer worked due to the power outage; many of the elderly who depend on electric to pump oxygen or to power other medical necessities had to go to hospitals whose generators were, mercifully, functional.
The danger, however, was and is far beyond a simple inconvenience. All of America learned a lesson on September 11, 2001: the enemy can attack almost without warning. If nearly three thousand lives were lost on that day, how many more could have been lost during the Blackout had the Enemy chosen to strike? The thought is not pleasant.
The Oscar-winning movie The Matrix offers a futuristic view of what could happen should humans become too dependent on technology. Perhaps it is most apparent when Morpheus tells Neo how the machines took over Earth and instituted “a neural-interactive simulation” that gives the movie its title (“Theory”). The thought that machines could overwhelm and enslave the human race might be too “sci-fi” for some people to believe but in the wake of Blackout we would do well not to be so smug.
Technology has, in many ways, enhanced the quality of life for humans. The good side should not overshadow the darker side, however. The dangerous addiction Americans currently have to technology might be our downfall so remember the Blackout and, with proper supervision, learn how to light a match.
