Writers who have no clips often believe that they cannot get work. That leads them to accepting underpaid and unappreciated jobs that in the end will not put them in a better position to land better gigs. If you are in that position, you have options! Don’t settle for jobs that aren’t worth your time. Instead work on making yourself more marketable.
1) Find the right markets.
Locate a couple of markets that work with new writers. You can find them by searching online using “welcomes new writers” or “new or experienced writers” and similar phrases. You will come up with magazines and e-zines that will be happy to give an opportunity to someone without any publishing credits. Start by studying these publications. See what they want and then work up a good query for them.
2) Write on spec.
“On spec” is writer-speak for “on speculation.” You write the full article and send it to a market asking if they want to publish it. Some markets don’t accept full manuscripts, so be sure to check the guidelines. Still it is a way to get started with your writing career. Show the editor that you can write a well-crafted piece, and she will forget about the fact that you have no writing credits. (You should never volunteer that information, by the way, but you have to be honest if asked.)
3) Create a writing sample.
Many jobs, particularly in web writing, ask for a sample of your writing. They don’t ask for something that has been published. They just want to see if you can write. You should sit down and come up with an article idea on a topic with which you are familiar. Write a sample piece on that topic, and you can use it to show prospective clients.
4) Start a website or blog.
While these credits are still a little iffy, they do show initiative and a commitment to writing. Start your own site on a topic near and dear to your heart and produce quality writing. If someone asks for a sample in an email query, you can give them the URL so that they can see for themselves. You also are creating a place for you in that niche, so your own site has double benefits.
These ideas are just a few of the ways you can work on getting writing samples and clips when you are starting your writing career. Don’t give up because of one single roadblock. There are ways around it.

On one of those days when I was feeling quite proud of my ability to string a few words together, I decided it was high time I stopped depriving the United Kingdom’s quality national newspapers of my talents, and started to prepare a cheeky-but-endearing email to each of their editors.
I’d written a four-hundred word article on the politically sensitive but prominent issue
of the alleged agreement between Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor of the
Exchequer Gordon Brown to effectively time-share the position of Prime Minister in
order to resolve a personal feud – a bizarre and highly questionable arrangement, yet
one which the UK media seemed quite happy to let go unchallenged.
Knowing how seriously accuracy is taken in the industry, I ran my article through a
spell-checker a dozen or so times, and, certain beyond any doubt that it contained not
a single spelling error, I published the article on my website, whose address I then
included in my cheeky email.
Several days later, while watching the news, I was reminded that the new leader of the
Conservative Party – the second largest political party in the United Kingdom – was in
fact called David Cameron, rather than David Campbell.
I haven’t yet heard back from any of the newspapers yet, but I imagine they’re
probably just very busy at the moment.

Revered by many for his business acumen and dexterity, Intelius founder Naveen Jain is a concrete embodiment of the basic fact that success comes with hard work, dedication, and the ability to perceive the maximum potential of even the simplest ideas. Naveen Jain was born from a simple family in India. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology (Roorkee), Jain then took his masters at the XLRI Jamshedpur School of Business and Human Resources. Naveen Jain went to the United States through a business exchange program. He first worked at a firm in New Jersey for a year. By 1989, Jain worked at Microsoft Corporation and he eventually handled the Microsoft Network (MSN) as a group manager. After seven years of working for Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft whom Jain cited as his role model, Jain went on to form his own company from scratch. In March 1996, Jain created InfoSpace, which started out as an early online search engine and Internet directory. It eventually ventured into developing Internet software and applications services including personal homepages, instant messaging, message boards, and Web-based e-mail. Due to the company’s success, sites such as MSN, Lycos, AOL, and Go Network have been using InfoSpace technology. Jain led InfoSpace into becoming one of the largest Internet businesses that its net worth reached to more than $31 billion at its prime. After his resignation as CEO from InfoSpace, Naveen Jain once again produced another innovative breakthrough. He founded Intelius in 2003 as an information commerce firm that offers an incredible suite of products ranging from basic people search to criminal checks, sex offender reports, and identity protection services. Just six years in the industry, Intelius has already received generous praises from the technology industry, including being named a “Rising Star” in the 2007 Deloitte & Touche’s Technology Fast 50 Program.

If you’re a regular business traveler then paying for your trips by credit card makes a lot of sense. Some business credit cards come with additional benefits like free travel insurance, and emergency medical and legal cover. By having these kinds of situations covered you can travel safe in the knowledge that if something were to go wrong you’d be protected.
This is particularly important when you’re traveling abroad because if you were to become ill in Spain for example and you didn’t have insurance you could end up with a huge bill for your medical treatment. The same things apply to travel and legal insurance, and without cover you could be liable to pay large bills if you were to be involved in an accident or dispute. It’s worth checking with your credit card company to make sure these situations are covered, and if not you may need to take out separate insurance to be on the safe side.
You can also use your credit card to snag some great travel deals . If you have an airline mileage card you’ll accrue points every time you use it to book a flight, or hire a rental car. These points can be exchanged later on for additional flights or vouchers, making them very attractive to business travelers. Some credit cards also offer cashback schemes whereby every time you pay for something a percentage of the amount spent will be paid back into your account. It’s a similar concept to the airline mileage cards I described earlier, but instead of being rewarded with points you are rewarded with a cash sum. If you’re already familiar with cashback schemes and like the way they work you may prefer to use one of these cards instead of an airline mileage card. One benefit of the cashback cards is you can use the cash rewards in any way you choose, whereas with airline mileage points you’re more restricted in terms of what you can spend them on.

The slave trade was a horrible evil trade that is said to be alive and well to this day and understanding the motivation behind it will help us understand and appreciate the true value of a marketing article.
A slave works for you for life to produce wealth and yet receives no wages or investment from your part. Imagine a tool that does that for your marketing and you are definitely thinking of a marketing article.
Well written marketing articles where you have taken the time to carefully choose the best keywords to use will continue to attract increasing traffic from search engines. This traffic is usually not only highly targeted, but it is free in more ways than one. You are not paying a dime to maintain your marketing article and neither are you spending any time making alterations or updates to it, and yet it faithfully continues to generate more and more traffic for you.
The reason why your marketing article will tend to yield increased traffic rather than reducing or constant traffic is because as your site grows in age and as you increase the number of links pointing at it, its’ ranking will improve. More sites will also link to it and the same old ’slave’ marketing article will therefore tend to get a bigger audience.
Then there is the fact that the viral effect will be more wide spread with time, meaning that more sites out there will re-post your marketing article from the directories where you may have posted it complete with your resource box to direct traffic to your site.
How many ’slave’ marketing articles have you put out there to work for you today?
Christopher Kyalo has many affiliate programs running successfully and he uses only articles to generate enough traffic to his affiliate blogs.
